Service Description
Become the leader who trains the lifeguards. This course certifies you to teach the American Red Cross basic-level Lifeguarding courses, including CPR/AED and First Aid for Professional Rescuers. Delivered in a blended format, the Lifeguarding Instructor Course combines self-paced online learning with hands-on, in-person instruction. ________________________________________ Course Overview • Blended Format: 8-10 hour online precourse work + 16 hours of in-person instruction (plus time for breaks/transitions) ________________________________________ Prerequisites Candidates must: • Be at least 17 years old by the final session • Hold current Red Cross Lifeguarding certification (including Deep Water, CPR/AED, and First Aid) • Complete the online session before the first in-person class • Successfully pass a prerequisite skill assessment, which includes: o Water entry & approach o Deep water surface dive (7–10 ft) o Passive submerged rescue o Rapid extrication with assisting rescuer o 3 minutes of single-rescuer CPR ________________________________________ Required Materials Bring to in-person sessions: • Lifeguarding Instructor’s Manual (print copy required) • Lifeguarding Manual (print or digital) • Access to course videos and presentations (access provided by instructor) Download or purchase materials or access via your Red Cross Learning Center Instructor Candidate account. ________________________________________ What You’ll Learn and Teach Participants will learn how to: • Conduct skill practice and polish sessions • Demonstrate instructor-level proficiency in key water rescue and first aid skills • Deliver Red Cross course content effectively • Facilitate group teaching assignments • Evaluate peers and provide constructive feedback ________________________________________ Certification Requirements To earn your Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor certification, you must: • Complete both the online and in-person components • Pass all skill assessments and teaching assignments • Score 80% or higher on the final exam • Attend all sessions and participate fully ________________________________________ Certification Upon successful completion, you’ll receive: American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor (valid for 2 years) To maintain certification, you must complete a recertification course within the 2-year window. A one-year grace period applies for renewal (instructors may not teach during that time).
